Simple Metrics Provide KPI's for Process Plants

This paper explains how to set up this Management Key Plant Performance Overview.

Managers and plant personell need a basis for determining how well a plant is operating. They decide on KPI's or Key Performance Indicators that show the health of plant operations. These KPI's can be made up of several simple metrics or assessments. For example, one set of metrics could be:

% of loops not in a normal mode more than 95% of the time
% of loops where "output at a limit" is over 5%
% of loops oscillating

Follow these steps to create this KPI report in PlantTriage:

Review the template, ManagementKPI.ptt. When applied it changes the baselines and thresholds for these key metrics only. It:
- Sets the baseline for Time in Normal to 100. Low threshold to 95.
- Sets the baseline for Output at Limit to 0. High threshold to 5.
- Sets the baseline for Oscillating to 0. High threshold to 80.
- All other baselines and thresholds are not changed.
Modify the template to suit your plant:
1. Select Tools|Template Manager.
2. Select the ManagementKPI.ppt template. Click Edit.
3. Make any desired changes and click OK.
Apply the ManagementKPI template to all loops:
1. Select Tools|Set Baselines and Thresholds.
2. Choose any loop.
3. Choose any assessments to view.
4. In the Select a loop area (lower left) select (in both combo boxes) the either Entire Plant or the plants you would like to apply the template.
5. In the Template area (lower center) select ManagementKPI template.
6. Click Apply template for entire group.
From the browser interface in PlantTriage create a report using %L for your KPI's.
1. Login to the browser interface.
2. Select Plant Summary List or Site Summary List.
3. Select Manage Columns.
4. Select New column set.
5. Enter a name for the column set, Corporate KPI, for example. Click Apply.
6. Select the columns you want from the left combo box and click Insert.
  - Use the %L columns for the % of loops over threshold.
  - Choose %L Time in Normal, and click Insert.
  - Choose %L Output at Limit, and click Insert.
  - Choose %L Oscillating, and click Insert.
7. Select the Public radio button. (Allows others access to this report).
8. Click Apply.
9. Click close to return to the Plant Summary.
10. Select the plant you would like to view and the time window you would like. For example to see the report based on the last week, select over a 1 week period Ending now.
11. For quick access, add this page to your favorites.
To view this report choose it from your favorite menu or from the PlantTriage home page.
