The Fast & Easy Way to Find Optimal Tuning
With AutoTune, answer the questions, and your loop is tuned. Tunes and analyzes loops from data collected in either manual or automatic. During AutoTune, you have total control of the tuning process. Get data for analysis and tuning from a setpoint change.
The AutoTune wizard will guide you through the tuning process. PID Loop Optimizer will suggest new tuning values immediately. You can simulate the new tuning and download to the controller.
For experienced engineers, see the section on Process Modeling & Advanced Tuning.
Choose the Tuning You Want
You have complete control over the selection of tuning parameters. You can choose from ExperTune's suggested tuning methods, or use your own. Choose tuning graphically using our Robustness Plot. Choose from:
- Optimal: minimum absolute error to step load—recommended
- Fast: quarter amplitude damping (approximates Ziegler Nichols)
- Slow: 10% overshoot
- Setpoint (Lambda) PID tuning.
Test and try what-if, before you download
Test different tunings in simulation before you download to find the best one for your process.
For a quantitative check of performance ExperTune gives you a Performance Increase. Often the Performance Increase is directly proportional to the money saved using the new tuning.
Adjust the safety factor for the response and robustness you want.
There is always a trade-off between fast tuning and sensitivity to changing process conditions (changing gain and dead time ). The fastest tuning with the lowest safety factor is also the most sensitive to a changing process. Conversely, the slowest tuning with the highest safety factor is the least sensitive or more robust.
ExperTune quickly lets you compare simulated time and robustness plots, off-line, before you download PID values. Compares current to new values.
Setpoint tuning: ExperTune Uses traditional Lambda tuning rules for the setpoint tuning category. Choose between lag rule or integrating rule. Other software packages using lambda tuning require you to tune from manual step changes in the controller output (open loop). ExperTune lets you tune and analyze from this data or from a manual pulse, or setpoint (closed loop) data. ExperTune's only requirement on the data is to start settled, do a quick change and end settled (with no load upsets).
Advanced Tuning Options
Some control loops are more complex. If you are dealing with non-linear processes, or special control loop applications, you will need some more sophisticated tools. PID Loop Optimizer has all the tools you need.
Works With Your Control System
ExperTune has been working with industrial process controllers for over 20 years. Over 500 algorithms are supported.
PID Loop Optimizer works in the native units of your controller. If your controller requires integral times in repeats per minute, PID Loop Optimizer knows that, and gives you the results in those units.
Connect via Industry-Standard OPC
ExperTune products are certified compliant with OPC. This includes testing from compliance and interoperability testing.
You can connect to your controller using any of the following methods:

Tune and Analyze Data from Your Plant Historian
Use the historical plant data from your plant historian for optimization, analysis, and PID Tuning. PID Tuner, Advanced, includes HDA, or Historical Data Access allowing you to view, analyze and tune data from any HDA source. (HDA is a standard from the OPC foundation that allows tools like ExperTune's to easily access the historian's data.)
Allows you to:
Use historized data from:
ExperTune software is certified compliant by the OPC Foundation.
The Loop Summary table provides a concise way of quickly recording the results of several loop tests. It tabulates tuning parameters, model parameters, RRT, quality of fit, and relative stability index from several loop tests. From these tests it automatically:
- Selects the most conservative tuning values.
- Provides the average tuning values.
- Indicates relative stability.
The table lists the results from your previous tests on the loop:
- PID values
- Model parameters
- Relative Response Time (RRT)
- Stability Index. Easily compare the relative stability of the PID tuning
- Quality of frequency data fit
Simulate Tuning Before Download
You can make sure that you know exactly how the controller will behave with the new tuning. PID Loop Optimizer simulates the "before" and "after" response to:
Eliminate Trial-and-Error. Be confident that you have chosen the right tuning.
Download Directly to the Controller
When you are satisfied with the tuning, you can download it directly to the controller. If your site security policy prevents this, that's OK too. The tuning values are presented in the native units for your controller, so you can just type them in on the control system's interface.
