ExperTune's new Loop Summary Table finds the best PID settings to use for
loops that behave differently with varying conditions.
Perform several tests on a loop and the table summarizes the results
for you. For each test, the Loop Summary Table lists the tuning
parameters, process model, model confidence, and relative response
time for the loop. The table automatically highlights the most
conservative and the average tuning values. The most conservative
tuning values are useful in loops with varying conditions, e.g.,
temperature loops that heat up quicker than they cool down. They may
be the only tuning values that are stable.
The Loop Summary Table saves the process model. So you can compare
the process model today with the process model from a previous
ExperTune test. This gives you a historical perspective, aiding in
troubleshooting.
The relative response time calculation is unique to ExperTune. It is
a measure of the time the loop takes to correct a disturbance. Use
it to decouple interacting loops. Faster loops should be tuned to
have an RRT at least 3 times smaller than slower loops. You can then
be sure that the faster loop will correct a disturbance before it has
much effect on the slower loop.
ExperTune's full suite of optimization tools make it easy to increase
the efficiency of your process. Use ExperTune software to analyze
and tune PID loops in any industrial controller. ExperTune includes
powerful simulation, modeling, robustness, linearization, valve wear
analysis, pH linearizer, time series analysis, multi-variable,
statistical and frequency response tools. ExperTune creates a full
report of the analysis in Microsoft Word.

A control loop fighting a sticky valve will often push the loop into
a cycle. The cycle can permeate through an entire plant causing
havoc and off-spec product.
A new version of ExperTune's PID Loop Analyzer includes a stiction
check wizard. The wizard provides a simple way of measuring the
stiction in the control loop. ExperTune's wizard works on the
installed valve, giving a true measure of the in-service valve
stiction. Measuring the in-service stiction is much more significant
than measuring it when the valve is not in use.
If the measured stiction is larger than 1%, then repairing the valve
can result in much better performance and increased product
quality. Reducing stiction may eliminate a troublesome cycle,
resulting in product made closer to specification with less energy.
Checking a valve for stiction is the third of 5 steps to completely
optimize the loop. The complete optimization steps are:
- Statistical analysis and diagnosis from normal operating data.
- Power Spectral Density analysis to check for hidden cycles.
- Check and correct valve problems: stiction, hysteresis and sizing.
- Test for and characterize non-linearities. Apply a characterizer to linearize the loop.
- Find optimal PID Tuning parameters.
ExperTune includes all the tools needed to make completing the
optimization steps simple. ExperTune creates a full loop report
including stiction analysis in Microsoft Word.

Operation startups, product switchovers, and steady state operation
usually require different PID control system parameters. Most
systems are optimized for setpoint changes: switchovers, and
start-ups. But the loop performs poorly during steady state
operation. Not any more - ExperTune's new software optimizes your
plant for all of these scenarios.
ExperTune's solution is a setpoint filter combined with optimal
tuning for steady state operation. The result is smooth setpoint
response in combination with best response to process upsets. The
setpoint filter is active only during setpoint changes. This allows
the user to select ExperTune's optimal tuning for process upsets.
With these PID settings in place, the feedback control loop is
tightened to its utmost, giving excellent steady state optimization.
The setpoint filter ensures the loop also reacts well to plant
startups and switchovers. You can use ExperTune to view the effects
of the setpoint filter off-line in simulation before applying it to
the process. Adjust the filter amount and immediately see the effect
on the closed loop response. Taylor the response to exactly what your
plant needs.
ExperTune creates a report of the entire loop optimization, including
all the analysis graphs, performance indices, loop diagnosis and the
setpoint filter in a Microsoft Word document. The report documents
your loop for future records.

The new version of ExperTune optimizes processes with shrink-swell
characteristics. These shrink-swell processes are also called inverse
response since, when the controller output changes, the level
initially moves in the opposite direction to where it will end up.
ExperTune now makes these particularly challenging processes easy to
model, tune and optimize. Using data collected from one setpoint
change, ExperTune finds the optimal PID tuning parameters and model
for the loop. The model consists of a lead time, lag time,
integration and dead time.
ExperTune makes drum level control as easy as working with your less
challenging loops. Just like any other loop, use ExperTune's full
suite of tools for analysis and optimization: powerful simulation,
modeling, robustness, frequency and valve wear analysis graphs of
your plant loop, simply by clicking "Analysis".
The ExperTune simulation shows the performance improvements of your
loop during setpoint changes and load disturbances. The unique
ExperTune Robustness plot shows how sensitive the loop is to gain and
dead time changes. Combining these simulation plots allows you to see
the best tradeoff between tuning and stability before you download
tuning.
Only ExperTune finds the fourth tuning parameter: PV Filter. The
correct PV Filter value ensures no degradation of performance while
reducing output noise and hence valve wear. An incorrect PV Filter
value can seriously degrade control loop performance.
For your records, ExperTune produces a hard copy of your loop
analysis in a Microsoft Word document. This report includes all
analysis graphs, tuning parameters together with the resulting
Performance Increase, Robustness Increase and Valve Wear indices.

New version of ExperTune software shows how to decouple interacting
loops. ExperTune tunes the interacting loops without cycling to
respond as fast as the coupled process allows.
ExperTune's Relative Response Time or RRT is the key to the new
method. Simply adjust the safety factor so the Relative Response
Time of each loop is separated by a factor of 3.
In single or multiple level deep cascade loops the RRT lets you check
each successive outer loop to be sure it is set correctly.
Other multi-variable analysis tools in ExperTune are correlation
analysis to see if one loop is effecting another and power spectral
density analysis to pinpoint the location of process cycling.

Badly performing process control loops reduce plant profitability.
This free CD from ExperTune teaches how to diagnose and fix the
problems on your badly performing loops.
Roughly 75% of process control loops cause more variability running
in automatic mode than in manual. A third of them oscillate because of
non-linearities: hysteresis, stiction, dead band, non-linear
process gain. Another third oscillate because of poor controller
tuning, and the remaining loops due too poor design. When a control
loop is running optimally, variability is minimized. The plant can
operate closer to specifications, maximizing production and profitability.
The training has been created by TOP Control, ExperTune's official
trainer and service provider. They have years of experience in
solving process control problems. Now they've put their knowledge
into a free training CD and a series of in depth articles on
optimizing process loops.
The CD uses a case study of a typical loop. It explains and demonstrates
the basic steps to analyze and tune the control loop.

ExperTune's new software provides linearization for any pH loop
resulting in pH control with little or no cycling. Better pH control
improves product quality, reduces reagent costs and helps to keep pH
within regulation limits.
pH loops are inherently non-linear and cycle around the setpoint.
ExperTune calculates the characterizer that should be applied to
both the measurement and set point of the pH loop. The linearized pH
measurement can then be accurately controlled by a traditional PID
controller.
The ExperTune pH Linearizer uses titration data you enter. It plots
a pH curve and converts the curve into the characterizer that is
applied to the pH loop. For easy application of the characterizer
within your controller, X-Y coordinates, BASIC, FORTRAN, or C code,
are all automatically generated.
